Chapter 15

Chex

I laid on the ground, doubled over in pain as Andy’s body disappeared into the ether. Her wrist comm hit the ground as she dematerialized. Rage coursed through my body. I let out a roar as my scaled armor pushed itself up through my skin. Red clouded my vision. Orequin’s voice felt far away as she directed the others into action. My fist punched the ground.

“Where did she go?” I screamed as I jumped to my feet.

Orequin made a face as she shifted on her feet. “My data shows there is evidence of a bomb that would have gone up. Somehow, they hid it from our sensors. I’m going to have to figure it out. This shows a flaw in our security. Maybe that’s why they chose this cave? If anyone else had touched it, it would have blown. Her DNA inactivated it. I don’t know how they programmed it. Was it programmed for human DNA? It’s really complicated tech from what I know. It’s inert now, but I think what she said was right.”

“It has to be a long-distance ‘port. There are no other ships around the planet,” Kyali mumbled to Orequin.

Someone else picked up Andy’s comm device. “Must have been anti-tracking, too. Expensive ‘port. Why would they want her?”

My wrist comm vibrated. I answered the comm. Ricon appeared on the screen. He was rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m sorry, but Andy just ‘ported to you. I tried to stop her. What if she ‘ports into stone? Keep a lookout for her. She wasn’t really making much sense.”

I blinked. Some of the rage dissipated as confusion rushed through me. “Andy was just ‘ported off the planet. What are you talking about? Did she tell you about the bomb?”

“That’s not possible! It was a short-distance transport initiated by her. She mentioned something about danger. How would she know that, though?”

“No, you must be wrong. She argued with me for a few minutes.”

“That’s not possible. I called you right away.”

“It’s what happened, Ricon! How could she have ‘ported into the past?” I screamed into the comm. As I hung up the communication, I slapped the wrist comm. I was staring at the ground. Breathe in and out. Breathe in and out. My scales slid back under my skin. How does this human get herself into these situations?

Orequin sat beside me. “Caithes can move through time. I swear I saw that cat dart around here,” she whispered.

I looked up at her. “Are you suggesting that the cat is a Caithe? That is impossible.”

Orequin shrugged. “What do we do now?”

“Was this a trap from Bracks?”

“Of course. He wanted to arrest her the day he saw her. Probably from the moment he saw her.”

“What do we do now?”

“What do you think? We have to save Andy. It was my fault, and it’s up to me to save her,” I replied.

“She’s your mate. I am sure there were some galactic laws broken there,” Orequin said. One of her tendrils picked up a rock from the ground.
